Specification

4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 60°C: 150 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 180 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 205 Amps

Applications:

Aluminum SER (Service Entrance) cable is mainly used in branch circuits and panel feeders in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The voltage rating of this cable is 600 volts. The cable is designed for use in wet and dry locations, with an operating temperature up to 90°C.

This particular 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 size is typically used for:

  • Main panel feeds in larger residential homes, supporting up to 200A service.
  • Subpanel feeds for multi-unit residential buildings or larger commercial applications.
  • Power distribution from meter bases to 200A panelboards.
  • Feeding high-power equipment such as HVAC systems, electric furnaces, and other large appliances.
  • Backup generator connections, requiring a 200A-rated feeder.

Also Known As:

4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 type r cable, 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 service entrance cable, 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 ser cable, 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 aluminum ser cable, 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 aluminum service entrance cable, 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 electrical entrance cable.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15

  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors

  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge

  • 90°C wet or dry locations

  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load

  • UL 44

Construction

Conductors:

The 4/0-4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 designation means this cable contains:

  • The conductors are compact stranded soft-drawn 8000 series aluminum, designed to transmit electric current.

Insulation:

Aluminum SER cable has a type XHHW-2 cross linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation. The conductors are cabled together with a bare aluminum ground and covered with a reinforced binder tape. For color code, see table B in the technical section.

Assembly:

Two, three or four insulated conductors and a bare ground conductor cabled together and covered with a reinforced binder tape.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 4/0

  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 2/0

  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 1.577

  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 1204 lbs

  • Ampacity at 90°C: 205 Amps

  • Ampacity in dwelling: 200 Amps

FAQ's

What does 4/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0 AL SER mean?

One 4/0 AWG aluminum conductor (typically serving as the neutral) plus four 2/0 AWG aluminum phase and grounding conductors, configured as a five-conductor three-phase feeder with an oversized neutral.

What is SER cable?

SER is a NEMA and UL type designation for Service Entrance cable, Style R. "SE" identifies it as service entrance cable, and "R" designates the construction style: the individually insulated conductors are cabled together and covered by a moisture and flame-resistant jacket over a reinforcement tape or braid layer. This distinguishes it from Style U (SEU), where a bare concentric neutral is wound around the insulated conductors under the jacket. SER is rated 600V and governed by NEC Article 338.

Does 4/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0 AL SER include a ground wire?

Yes. One of the 2/0 AWG conductors is the equipment grounding conductor.

Can 4/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0 AL SER be used as a three-phase feeder?

Yes. The oversized 4/0 neutral is intended for three-phase systems with significant harmonic or unbalanced neutral currents.

Can I use 4/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0 AL SER for a subpanel?

Yes, for a three-phase subpanel up to approximately 175A.

Can AL SER cable be used in conduit?

Yes. Note that a five-conductor cable counts as four current-carrying conductors in most three-phase applications, which triggers an 80% ampacity derate under NEC 310.15(C)(1) any time the cable is in a raceway.

Is AL SER cable rated for outdoor use?

Yes, most modern AL SER is listed for outdoor use when properly supported and protected from physical damage per NEC 338.10 and 230.51.

Does interior AL SER need to be in conduit?

No. Interior AL SER can be run exposed or concealed following the installation methods for NM cable under NEC Article 334.

How far can I run 4/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0 AL SER before voltage drop becomes a problem?

At 175A on 208V three-phase, roughly 145 feet within 3% drop.At 175A on 208V three-phase, roughly 145 feet within 3% drop.

Where should service entrance conductors terminate?

Per NEC 230.70, service entrance conductors must terminate at the service disconnecting means, located at a readily accessible location either outside the building or inside nearest the point of entrance.
