Shipboard cables are the type of marine-grade wire used exclusively on the board of the ship. Just like regular marine cables, they are meant to work in a highly corrosive marine environment. They also have superior corrosion resistance and are submerged in water during work. What differentiates shipboard cables from other marine cables is that they are designed with specific ship requirements in mind.

The cables are used on various ships, including workboats, tugs, fishing boats, casino boats, and other commercial vessels. They can be used in power, lighting, weapon control systems, degaussing, audio, telephone, call bells, announcing and alarm systems, and interior communication, among many other applications. Some shipboard cables are specifically designed for navy commercial marine ships in and out of the United States.

Shipboard cables come in watertight and non-watertight varieties and may be suitable for flexing and non-flexing applications. All of them have copper conductors, and they come with a variety of insulations, including EPR, XLPE, silicone rubber, thermoplastic nylon, or cross-linked polyalkene with irradiated Kynar. Many shipboard cables have a low-smoke, zero-halogen XLPO jacket that protects from the emission of harmful gases in the event of a fire, though thermoplastic and silicone rubber jackets are also common. Some shipboard cables have superior resistance to oil or extreme temperatures, making them perfect for specific applications. Some cables have an extra level of protection with armor or shielding.
