8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 60°C: 35 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 40 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 45 Amps

Applications:

8-8-8 Aluminum SER cable is mainly used for residential and light commercial panel feeders and branch circuits. It is rated for 600V and designed for use in both wet and dry locations with an operating temperature of 90°C.

This particular 8-8-8 size is suitable for:

  • Feeding small subpanels in homes, garages, and workshops (typically 40-50A service).
  • Connecting smaller load centers in residential or light commercial applications.
  • Supplying power to mid-sized electric appliances like water heaters and smaller HVAC units.
  • Light-duty panel feeders where a ground conductor is not required by code.

Also Known As:

8-8-8 type r cable, 8-8-8 service entrance cable, 8-8-8 ser cable, 8-8-8 aluminum ser cable, 8-8-8 aluminum service entrance cable, 8-8-8 electrical entrance cable, 8-8-8 aluminum wire.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15
  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors
  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge
  • 90°C wet or dry locations
  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load
  • UL 44

Construction

Conductors:

The "8-8-8" designation means this SER cable contains three conductors, each with an 8 AWG (American Wire Gauge) size:

All conductors are made of compact stranded 8000 series aluminum, which is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and highly conductive.

Insulation:

Each insulated conductor is coated with XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which provides:

  • High heat resistance (rated up to 90°C).
  • Moisture resistance for wet and dry locations.
  • Durability against mechanical stress and chemical exposure.

Assembly:

Two, three or four insulated conductors and a bare ground conductor cabled together and covered with a reinforced binder tape.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 8
  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 8
  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 0.488
  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 97 lbs
  • Ampacity at 90°C: 45 Amps
  • Ampacity in dwelling: 50 Amps

FAQ's

What does 8-8-8 AL SER mean?

Two 8 AWG aluminum hot conductors and one 8 AWG aluminum neutral. A three-conductor configuration used for service or two-wire feeder applications.

What is SER cable?

SER is a NEMA and UL type designation for Service Entrance cable, Style R. "SE" identifies it as service entrance cable, and "R" designates the construction style: the individually insulated conductors are cabled together and covered by a moisture and flame-resistant jacket over a reinforcement tape or braid layer. This distinguishes it from Style U (SEU), where a bare concentric neutral is wound around the insulated conductors under the jacket. SER is rated 600V and governed by NEC Article 338.

Does 8-8-8 AL SER include a ground wire?

No. 8-8-8 is a three-conductor cable with two hots and a neutral only. For applications requiring an equipment grounding conductor (feeders and subpanels), use 8-8-8-8 AL SER.

What is the main difference between SER and SEU cable?

SER (Style R) has separate insulated hot and neutral conductors plus an equipment grounding conductor. This four-conductor construction makes SER suitable for runs from a main service panel to a subpanel, such as a panel in a detached garage, workshop, or another part of a building.

SEU (Style U) has insulated hot conductors surrounded by a bare concentric neutral and does not include a separate equipment grounding conductor. It is therefore mainly used on the service side of the electrical system, for example, between the meter and the main service panel, where neutral and ground are bonded at the service equipment.

What are the permitted uses for 8-8-8 AL SER?

8-8-8 AL SER is used for small residential service entrance runs and two-wire feeder applications up to approximately 40A. Typical uses include feeding a garage or workshop where an equipment grounding conductor is not required, or as a service entrance from the meter to a small main panel. It is not suitable for modern four-wire subpanel feeders; use 8-8-8-8 AL SER for those.

Can 8-8-8 AL SER be used for a subpanel?

No, not by itself. Modern NEC rules require a separate equipment grounding conductor for subpanels, so use 8-8-8-8 AL SER instead.

Can I use AL SER cable to feed a shed or detached garage?

Yes, using a four-conductor version such as 8-8-8-8 AL SER, following NEC 225.30 and 250.32. A grounding electrode system is required at the detached structure.

Is AL SER cable rated for outdoor use?

Yes, most modern AL SER is listed for outdoor use when properly supported and protected from physical damage per NEC 338.10 and 230.51.

How far can I run 8-8-8 AL SER before voltage drop becomes a problem?

At a 40A load on 240V, roughly 70 feet within a 3% voltage drop.

Where should service entrance conductors terminate?

Per NEC 230.70, service entrance conductors must terminate at the service disconnecting means, located at a readily accessible location either outside the building or inside nearest the point of entrance.
