Specification

8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 60°C: 35 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 40 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 45 Amps

Applications:

8-8-8 Aluminum SER cable is mainly used for residential and light commercial panel feeders and branch circuits. It is rated for 600V and designed for use in both wet and dry locations with an operating temperature of 90°C.

This particular 8-8-8 size is suitable for:

  • Feeding small subpanels in homes, garages, and workshops (typically 40-50A service).
  • Connecting smaller load centers in residential or light commercial applications.
  • Supplying power to mid-sized electric appliances like water heaters and smaller HVAC units.
  • Light-duty panel feeders where a ground conductor is not required by code.

Also Known As:

8-8-8 type r cable, 8-8-8 service entrance cable, 8-8-8 ser cable, 8-8-8 aluminum ser cable, 8-8-8 aluminum service entrance cable, 8-8-8 electrical entrance cable, 8-8-8 aluminum wire.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15
  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors
  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge
  • 90°C wet or dry locations
  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load
  • UL 44

Construction

Conductors:

The "8-8-8" designation means this SER cable contains three conductors, each with an 8 AWG (American Wire Gauge) size:

  • Two phase conductors (hot wires) for carrying current.
  • One neutral conductor for returning current.
  • The conductors are cabled together with a bare aluminum ground conductor.
  • A reinforced binder tape holds the assembly together.

All conductors are made of compact stranded 8000 series aluminum, which is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and highly conductive.

Insulation:

Each insulated conductor is coated with XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which provides:

  • High heat resistance (rated up to 90°C).
  • Moisture resistance for wet and dry locations.
  • Durability against mechanical stress and chemical exposure.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 8
  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 8
  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 0.488
  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 97 lbs
  • Ampacity at 90°C: 45 Amps
  • Ampacity in dwelling: 50 Amps
