Allowable Ampacity for 2-2-2-2-4 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 90 Amps
Allowable Ampacity for 2-2-2-2-4 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 100 Amps
Applications:
2-2-2-2-4 Aluminum SER cable is primarily used as a service entrance cable in residential and light commercial applications. It is designed to supply power from the utility meter to the main panel and can also be used for panel feeders and branch circuits.
This cable has a 600V voltage rating and is suitable for both wet and dry locations, with an operating temperature not exceeding 90°C.
This particular 2-2-2-2-4 size, with an ampacity of 100 Amps, is commonly used for:
- Main panel feeds in residential homes.
- Subpanel feeds in homes, apartments, and small commercial buildings.
- Power distribution from meter bases to panelboards.
- Supplying power to high-load electrical appliances, such as HVAC systems and electric water heaters.
Also Known As:
2-2-2-2-4 type r cable, service entrance cable, 2-2-2-2-4 ser cable, 2-2-2-2-4 aluminum ser cable, 2-2-2-2-4 aluminum service entrance cable, 2-2-2-2-4 electrical entrance cable.
Standards:
-
Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15
-
60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors
-
70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge
-
90°C wet or dry locations
-
For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load
-
UL 44
Construction
Conductors:
The "2-2-2-2-4" designation means this SER cable contains five conductors:
- Four phase conductors (hot wires) with 2 AWG size for carrying current.
- One bare neutral conductor with 4 AWG size for returning current.
- The conductors are cabled together with a bare aluminum ground conductor.
- A reinforced binder tape holds the assembly together.
All conductors are made of compact stranded 8000 series aluminum, which provides lightweight properties, corrosion resistance, and high electrical conductivity.
Insulation:
Each insulated conductor is coated with XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which provides:
- High heat resistance (rated up to 90°C).
- Moisture resistance for wet and dry locations.
- Durability against mechanical stress and chemical exposure.
Jacket:
The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.
