Specification

4-4-4-6 ALUMINUM SER CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 4-4-4-6 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 60°C: 55 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 4-4-4-6 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 65 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 4-4-4-6 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 75 Amps

Applications:

Aluminum service entrance cable is mainly used in branch circuits and panel feeders. The voltage rating for this electrical cable is 600 volts. Aluminum service entrance cables are designed for use in adverse weather conditions, with operating temperatures being 90°C in both wet and dry locations.

However, type R cables can operate at 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated at 100 Amps or less or if it is marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors. In addition, SER cables can operate at 70°C when the electrical cable is terminated to equipment in circuits rated over 100 Amps or when marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge.

This particular 4-4-4-6 size, with an ampacity of up to 75 Amps, is commonly used for:

  • Subpanel feeds in homes, garages, and workshops.
  • Main panel feeds in residential and small commercial buildings.
  • Power distribution from meter bases to panelboards.
  • Feeding large electrical appliances, such as HVAC systems, electric water heaters, and ovens.

Also Known As:

4-4-4-6 type r cable, 4-4-4-6 service entrance cable, 4-4-4-6 ser cable, 4-4-4-6 aluminum ser cable, 4-4-4-6 aluminum service entrance cable, 4-4-4-6 electrical entrance cable.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15

  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors

  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge

  • 90°C wet or dry locations

  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load

  • UL 44

Construction

Conductors:

Aluminum type R cable has compact strand soft drawn 8000 series aluminum conductor, per ASTM B-801. The conductor is the electrode in the cable and is responsible for transmitting electric current.

Insulation:

Aluminum SER cable has a type XHHW-2 cross linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation. The conductors are cabled together with a bare aluminum ground and covered with a reinforced binder tape. For color code, see table B in the technical section.

Assembly:

Two, three or four insulated conductors and a bare ground conductor cabled together and covered with a reinforced binder tape.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 4

  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 6

  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 0.736

  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 240 lbs

  • Ampacity at 90°C: 75 Amps

  • Ampacity in dwelling: N/A

FAQ's

What does 4-4-4-6 AL SER mean?

Two 4 AWG aluminum hots, one 4 AWG aluminum neutral, and one 6 AWG aluminum equipment grounding conductor.

What is SER cable?

SER is a NEMA and UL type designation for Service Entrance cable, Style R. "SE" identifies it as service entrance cable, and "R" designates the construction style: the individually insulated conductors are cabled together and covered by a moisture and flame-resistant jacket over a reinforcement tape or braid layer. This distinguishes it from Style U (SEU), where a bare concentric neutral is wound around the insulated conductors under the jacket. SER is rated 600V and governed by NEC Article 338.

Does 4-4-4-6 AL SER include a ground wire?

Yes. The 6 AWG conductor is the equipment grounding conductor, sized per NEC Table 250.122 for the ampacity of the feeder.

Can I use 4-4-4-6 AL SER for a subpanel?

Yes, for a subpanel with a load up to approximately 65A.

Can I use AL SER cable to feed a shed or detached garage?

Yes. AL SER is commonly used to feed detached structures, following NEC 225.30 and 250.32.

What is the difference in applications between aluminum and copper AL SER cables?

Aluminum AL SER is the industry standard for residential services and large feeders because it is less expensive and lighter than copper at comparable ampacity. Aluminum requires larger conductor sizes than copper for the same load and antioxidant compound at terminations. Copper SER is chosen where space is tight or mechanical durability is critical.

Is AL SER cable rated for outdoor use?

Yes, most modern AL SER is listed for outdoor use when properly supported and protected from physical damage per NEC 338.10 and 230.51.

Is AL SER cable rated for wet locations?

AL SER manufactured with XHHW-2 insulated conductors is rated for wet locations. Standard XHHW or THHN versions are dry-location only.

How far can I run 4-4-4-6 AL SER before voltage drop becomes a problem?

At 65A on 240V, approximately 109 feet within 3% drop.

Do I need a separate ground rod at a subpanel fed by AL SER?

Only if the subpanel is in a detached structure. Per NEC 250.32, subpanels in separate buildings require a grounding electrode system. Subpanels in the same building as the main service do not.
