4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 60°C: 150 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 180 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 4/0-4/0-2/0 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 205 Amps

Applications:

Aluminum service entrance (SER) cable is primarily used for branch circuits and panel feeders in both residential and light commercial applications. The voltage rating for this cable is 600 volts, and it is designed for use in both wet and dry locations with operating temperatures up to 90°C.

This 4/0-4/0-2/0 size is commonly used for:

  • 150A main panel feeds in residential homes and small buildings.
  • Subpanel feeds in multi-unit dwellings or larger residential buildings.
  • Power distribution from meter bases to panelboards in light commercial buildings.
  • Feeding large appliances such as HVAC systems, electric water heaters, and other equipment with high electrical loads.
  • Backup generator connections where a 200A-rated feeder is required.

Also Known As:

4/0-4/0-2/0 type r cable, 4/0-4/0-2/0 service entrance cable, 4/0-4/0-2/0 ser cable, 4/0-4/0-2/0 aluminum ser cable, 4/0-4/0-2/0 aluminum service entrance cable, 4/0-4/0-2/0 electrical entrance cable.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15

  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors

  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge

  • 90°C wet or dry locations

  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load

  • UL 44

Construction

Conductors:

This 4/0-4/0-2/0 SER cable has:

The conductors are made from compact-stranded, soft-drawn 8000 series aluminum and are cabled together with a reinforced binder tape to maintain structural integrity.

Insulation:

Aluminum SER cable has a type XHHW-2 cross linked polyethylene (XLP) insulation. The conductors are cabled together with a bare aluminum ground and covered with a reinforced binder tape. For color code, see table B in the technical section.

Assembly:

Two, three or four insulated conductors and a bare ground conductor cabled together and covered with a reinforced binder tape.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 4/0

  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 2/0

  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 1.193

  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 690 lbs

  • Ampacity at 90°C: 205 Amps

  • Ampacity in dwelling: 200 Amps

FAQ's

What does 4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER mean?

Two 4/0 AWG aluminum hots and one 2/0 AWG aluminum neutral.

What is SER cable?

SER is a NEMA and UL type designation for Service Entrance cable, Style R. "SE" identifies it as service entrance cable, and "R" designates the construction style: the individually insulated conductors are cabled together and covered by a moisture and flame-resistant jacket over a reinforcement tape or braid layer. This distinguishes it from Style U (SEU), where a bare concentric neutral is wound around the insulated conductors under the jacket. SER is rated 600V and governed by NEC Article 338.

Does 4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER include a ground wire?

No. For subpanel and feeder applications requiring an equipment grounding conductor, use 4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER.

What is the main difference between SER and SEU cable?

SER (Style R) includes a separate insulated neutral plus an equipment grounding conductor, making it suitable for feeders and subpanels. SEU (Style U) uses a bare concentric neutral and is limited to service entrance runs.

Can 4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER be used for a subpanel?

No. Use 4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER when the application requires an equipment grounding conductor.

Can AL SER cable be used in conduit?

Yes. AL SER is permitted in conduit where physical protection is required. Ampacity adjustment factors in NEC 310.15(C)(1) apply once more than three current-carrying conductors share the raceway.

Is AL SER cable rated for outdoor use?

Yes, most modern AL SER is listed for outdoor use when properly supported and protected from physical damage per NEC 338.10 and 230.51.

Does interior AL SER need to be in conduit?

No. Interior AL SER can be run exposed or concealed following the installation methods for NM cable under NEC Article 334.

How far can I run 4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER before voltage drop becomes a problem?

At 200A on 240V, roughly 180 feet within 3% drop.

How do I identify different types of aluminum AL SER cables?

Aluminum AL SER is identified by the conductor size sequence printed on the jacket, such as 4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER or 4/0-4/0-4/0-2/0 AL SER. The sequence lists hot conductors first, then the neutral, and where present the equipment grounding conductor last. Fraction sizes (1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0) indicate larger AWG, and numbers followed by "kcmil" indicate conductors sized in thousand circular mils.
