8 THHN THWN-2 Stranded Copper Building Wire

THHN THWN-2 Copper Building Wire Allowable Ampacity in Duct: 55 Amps

Also Known As:

8  thhn, 8 awg thwn 2, 8 awg thhn, 8 stranded thhn, 8 gauge stranded wire, 8 copper wire, 8 awg stranded copper wire, 8 awg Copper wire, 8 awg building cable, 8 awg conduit wire, 8 awg nylon wire, 8 awg construction cable, 8 awg thermoplastic-insulated copper wire, 8 awg THHN-PVC tray cable.

8 THHN THWN-2 Applications:

THHN stands for thermoplastic high heat-resistant nylon. Known for versatility and durability, it is the most common type of building cable. The double marking THHN /THWN-2 indicates that the electrical wire is equally suitable for wet and dry conditions (The letter "W" means water-safe). Additionally, the cable is resistant to corrosion, excessive dryness, and the impact of chemicals. The building wire is rated 90 degrees Celsius in both wet and dry locations. The electrical wire is rated at 600 V.

THHN Applications include:

• Building Wiring: This encompasses everything from lighting circuits to outlets in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities.
• Conduit and Cable Trays: THHN is designed to be pulled through conduit, making it ideal for structured wiring systems in commercial and industrial settings. It's also commonly used in cable trays in industrial facilities.
• Control Systems: THHN can be used for wiring control circuits, including those for machinery, HVAC systems, and other building automation components.
• Machine Tool Wire: In manufacturing and industrial environments, THHN is commonly used to wire machine tools and equipment.
• Large Appliances: THHN wires can be used for connections inside large appliances like ovens, ranges, and HVAC units.
• Motor Connections: For connecting motors in both residential and commercial settings
• Feeders and Branch Circuits: In electrical distribution systems, THHN wires can serve as feeders (which extend from service panels to subpanels or major appliances) and branch circuits (which extend from panels to outlets, lights, or individual appliances).
• Service Entrance: While specific SE cables exist for this purpose, THHN wires can also be used for service entrances when appropriately configured and protected.

    Particular 8 THHN applications are:

    • Residential Subpanels: Power distribution in larger homes or homes with outbuildings.
    • Air Conditioning Units: For moderately-sized units both in residential and smaller commercial buildings.
    • Water Heaters: Especially electric water heaters that require higher amperage.

      8 THHN THWN-2 Construction:

      Conductor:

THHN THWN-2 conductors are constructed of annealed soft copper that follows ASTM B3 and ASTM B8 standards.

      Insulation:

The cable is insulated with a thermoset plastic jacket (PVC) that is flame-retardant, sunlight-resistant, lead-free, strong, and stable. Without being too bulky, it ensures that the cable can be used in harsh conditions. The jacket is color-coded by ICEA Method 4.

      8 THHN THWN-2 Standards:

      • ICEA S-73-532
      • UL 1277 (Resistant to flame, moisture, and sunlight)
      • UL 1581, UL 83, UL 1063, UL 758
      • A-A59544
      • ASTM B3 and B8 conductor
      • ANSI/NFPA 70 for Safe Electrical Design and Installation
      • RoHS compliant
      • Safe For Commercial and Industrial Use
      • Color-coded #1-E2 per ICEA S-73-532
      • May be used in NEC Class I and II systems
      • May be used in Division 2 hazardous locations
      • Allowed for Exposed Run (ER) and be used by NEC

          FAQ's

How Many Amps is #8 THHN Rated For?
          • If it has a 60°C (140°F) insulation rating, it is rated for up to 40 amps.
          • If it has a 75°C (167°F) insulation rating, it is rated for up to 50 amps.
          • If it has a 90°C (194°F) insulation rating, it is rated for up to 55 amps.
          What does THHN stand for?

THHN stands for "Thermoplastic High Heat-resistant Nylon-coated."

What is THHN Wire suitable for?

THHN wire is suitable for electrical conduits, indoor and outdoor use (as long as ranked THWN), building wire across industries, and control circuits.

          Can THHN Be Direct Buried?

THHN does not have an appropriate rating for direct burial because of its construction, but THHN/THWN-2 with a double rating can.

Does THHN Have to Be in Conduit?

Yes, THHN must always be installed in conduit as per NEC. The only exception to this rule is when THHN is installed in control panels.

Is THHN Rated for Wet Locations?

THHN is rated for dry locations, while THWN is rated for wet locations.

Can THHN Be Used in Underground Conduit?

The wire used for the underground conduit should have a THWN-2 rating for wet locations.

Can You Run THHN in Walls?

You can run THHN wire in walls within conduit or raceway, but NM-B wire is generally a more popular option for indoor wiring.

Can you use THHN wire for automotive?

Using THHN wire for automotive applications is not recommended.

          Is THHN wire waterproof?

THHN/THWN is not waterproof. While it is suited for wet or damp environments, it cannot be directly submerged into water.
