Can you use a CAT 3 cable for Ethernet?

  • Hello, I have a question. Can you use a CAT 3 cable for Ethernet or do I have to buy a new cable, it’s just that I already have one CAT 3.

    Can someone advise about it?

  • Nice question!

Hi there. Although CAT 3 cable is currently used in telephone wiring, it is no longer considered appropriate for modern networking since it only supports data transmission rates of up to 10 Mbps.  It was the first wire to support 10Base-T Ethernet networks and digital communications. We recommend you CAT 5 OR CAT 6. Check some good price recommendations:

Belden PVC Cat5e Ethernet Cable: This cable supports up to 1 Gbps and is great for indoor home installations.

CAT6 6 Gigabit Ethernet Cable: is designed for high-speed data transmission and reliable network performance. With support for speeds up to 10 Gbps and a frequency rating of 650MHz, it’s perfect for modern home or office networks.
