    FAQ's

    What is UF-B Wire?

UF-B wire (Underground Feeder - Type B) is an electrical wire used for direct burial in the ground without needing additional conduit. It's water-resistant, sunlight-resistant, and suitable for outdoor and underground applications, particularly for powering outbuildings and exterior lighting.

What are the particular applications of 12/3 UF-B Cable?
    • Multi-wire branch circuits that need both 120V and 240V
    • Outdoor HVAC units
    • Subpanel feeding
    • Large outdoor lighting systems
    • Outdoor pumps
What is the difference between UF-B wire with or without ground?

UF-B wire with ground is used for applications where additional safety is needed, such as when the wire is exposed to moisture. UF-B without ground can be used when local codes don't require grounding (f.e. lighting circuit where local code allows it).

What is UF-B cable permitted for use?

Article 340 of the NEC permits UF-B cable to be used for direct burial without the conduit. It also allows it for wet, damp, and corrosive locations. It can also be used above ground if UV-resistant and in conduit. UF-B is suitable for branch and feeder circuits for outbuilding and exterior applications.

Can UF-B wire be used indoors?

You can use UF-B indoors, but this is not a common practice. NEC does not ban UF-B indoors, but NM-B and THHN in conduit are more common interior cables that are easier to install.

What is the difference between 12/3 and 12/2 UF-B wire?

The difference lies in the number of conductors. 12/2 UF-B wire has two insulated wires (black and white) and a bare ground, making it ideal for powering outdoor lights, outlets, or small appliances. 12/3 UF-B wire, with an additional red conductor, is better for applications like three-way switches, split receptacles, or circuits needing multiple loads. Both are designed for direct burial and sunlight exposure.

    Can UF-B be buried?

The cable is designed to be buried. The standard burial depth is 24 inches.

Can UF-B wire be put in conduit?

It is possible to run UF-B through PVC or metal conduit for underground applications, but THWN is a preferable option as it is easier to install.

    Can UF-B wire be exposed?

UF-B wire can be exposed if it is UV-resistant and not subject to physical damage.

    How to strip UF-B wire?
    • Turn off the power for safety.
    • Slice the gray outer jacket carefully without cutting the inner wires.
    • Peel back the jacket to expose the insulated wires.
    • Use wire strippers to remove the insulation from the ends of each wire, typically about 3/4 inch.
    • If there's a ground wire, strip it similarly if insulated.
