What is the purpose of a shielded twisted pair? | NassauNationalCable

What is the purpose of a shielded twisted pair?

  • The twisted pair is an ordinary copper wire that connects computer networks to a telephone company. To reduce electromagnetic induction between the pairs of wires, two insulated copper wires are twisted around each other.

Shielded twisted pair (STP) is a type of copper telephone and LAN wiring used in business installations. The shielded cable provides an outer covering or shields like foil wrapping or copper braid jacket that functions as a ground to ordinary twisted pair wiring. This wiring is color-coded and usually packaged in multiple pairs. Different uses, like analog, digital, and Ethernet, require specific pair multiples. Therefore, the color-coding facilitates differentiation between pairs.

Shielded twisted pair uses and applications

In terms of budget, twisted pair is the less expensive option to install in small businesses because other options like coaxial cable and fiber optic cable have higher prices and give the same service. Our Belden 22 AWG 3 Pair Unshielded Twisted Security And Alarm Cable is a perfect wiring option if you are looking for a reference that reduces electromagnetic interference from leaking out of or into the cable.
