Product Information
Specification

8-8-8 ALUMINUM SEU CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SEU CABLE at 60°C: 30 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SEU CABLE at 75°C: 40 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 8-8-8 ALUMINUM SEU CABLE at 90°C: 45 Amps

Applications:

8-8-8 Aluminum SEU cable is primarily used as a service entrance cable for residential applications, supplying power from the utility meter to the main panel. It can also be used for panel feeders in multi-unit dwellings and branch circuits. This cable has a 600V voltage rating and is designed for use in both wet and dry locations with a maximum operating temperature of 90°C.

This particular 8-8-8 size is suitable for:

  • Residential service entrance installations where the neutral also serves as a ground.
  • Supplying power from a utility pole to the main breaker panel.
  • Small subpanel feeders in apartments and multi-unit dwellings.
  • Branch circuits where a combined neutral/ground is acceptable per code.

Also Known As:

8-8-8 aluminum seu cable, 8-8-8 seu service entrance cable, 8-8-8 seu cable, 8-8-8 seu wire, 8-8-8 600v wire, 8-8-8 600v cable.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15

  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors

  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge

  • 90°C wet or dry locations

  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single-phase service conductors that supply the total load

  • UL 44, 854

  • Federal Specification J-C - 30B

Construction

Conductors:

The "8-8-8" designation means this SEU cable contains three conductors, each with an 8 AWG (American Wire Gauge) size:

  • Two phase conductors (hot wires) for carrying current.
  • One neutral conductor, which also serves as the ground conductor as per SEU cable design.
  • The conductors are cabled together with a bare aluminum neutral/ground conductor.
  • A reinforced binder tape holds the assembly together.

All conductors are made of compact stranded 8000 series aluminum, which is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and highly conductive.

Insulation:

Each insulated conductor is coated with XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which provides:

  • High heat resistance (rated up to 90°C).
  • Moisture resistance for wet and dry locations.
  • Durability against mechanical stress and chemical exposure.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 8

  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 8

  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 0.407

  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 210 lbs

  • Ampacity at 90°C: 45 Amps

  • Ampacity in dwelling: N/A

FAQ's

What is SEU cable?

SEU cable is a flat, 600V service entrance cable. It has two insulated conductors and a bare neutral wrapped around them, under a sunlight-resistant jacket. It carries power from the utility's service drop or meter to a building's main electrical panel.

What does the U stand for in SEU cable?

The U stands for unarmored. SE means service entrance, and the NEC and UL list the cable as Type SE, Style U. The name sets it apart from older armored service entrance cable and from SER, where the R stands for round.

What is the difference between SEU and SER cable?

Both are 600V Type SE service entrance cables, but they are built differently. SEU (Style U) has two insulated conductors wrapped by a bare concentric neutral, which gives it a flat profile. It is mainly used between the utility meter and the main panel. SER (Style R) is round, with its conductors cabled together, and its 4-wire versions carry an insulated neutral plus a separate bare ground. That makes SER the usual choice for feeders to subpanels.

What is a concentric neutral?

A concentric neutral is a layer of bare wire strands wrapped in a spiral around the cable's insulated conductors. In SEU cable, it serves as the neutral at the service and gives the cable its flat shape. Its size is given as an equivalent AWG; in 8-8-8 SEU, the neutral is equivalent to 8 AWG.

Can SEU cable be used outdoors?

Yes. The XHHW-2 insulation is rated for wet locations and the PVC jacket is sunlight resistant, so SEU is commonly run down exterior walls from the weatherhead to the meter and from the meter to the panel. Secure it within 12 inches of the service head, meter base, or panel and at intervals of no more than 30 inches (NEC 230.51). Where it could be hit, such as along a driveway, protect it with conduit or another approved guard.

Can SEU cable be installed indoors?

Yes, with limits. Indoors, SEU must follow the same support and protection rules as NM (Romex) cable (NEC 338.10(B)(4)). When it carries service conductors from the meter to the main panel, the panel must sit as close as practical to where the cable enters the building (NEC 230.70). Many local codes also set a maximum length for that indoor run.

Do I need a special weatherhead for SEU cable?

Yes. Use a service head made for SE cable and sized to fit it. A conduit-type weatherhead is made for individual wires in a mast and won't seal around a flat cable. The NEC also allows the cable itself to be formed into a gooseneck instead (NEC 230.54). Either way, leave a drip loop so water runs off before it reaches the connection.

Can SEU cable be run in conduit?

Yes, above ground. Conduit is often used for short sections where the cable needs protection, such as near grade or along a driveway. Because SEU is flat, size the conduit on the cable's widest dimension (NEC Chapter 9, Note 9). SEU is not permitted in underground conduit.

Can SEU cable be buried?

No. The NEC does not permit Type SE cable underground, with or without conduit. For underground service laterals and feeders, use aluminum URD or USE-2 cable.

Can I use SEU cable to feed a subpanel?

Not for a subpanel that serves 120V circuits. Downstream of the main service disconnect, the NEC requires the neutral and the equipment ground to be kept separate. SEU has only one bare conductor to do both jobs, so a subpanel feeder normally calls for 4-wire SER.

Can I use SEU to feed a subpanel in a detached garage, shed, or barn?

Not for a new installation. A feeder to a detached building that serves 120V circuits needs four wires: two hots, an insulated neutral, and a separate ground (NEC 250.32). SEU has only three. Use 4-wire SER for above-ground runs or aluminum URD quadruplex for underground runs. The exception is a detached building with its own utility meter, where SEU can serve as that building's service entrance cable.

Will aluminum SEU connect to my meter base and main panel?

Yes, when the lugs are rated for aluminum. Look for an AL/CU or AL9CU marking; most meter bases and main breakers carry one. Before connecting, clean the conductor ends, apply an oxide-inhibiting compound where the lug manufacturer calls for it, and torque each termination to the value marked on the equipment.
