4-4-4-6 Copper SER Service Entrance Cable

Allowable Ampacity at 60° C: 70 Amps

Allowable Ampacity at 75° C: 85 Amps

Allowable Ampacity at 90° C: 95 Amps

Applications:

4-4-4-6 Copper SER cable is a service entrance cable designed for use where service entrance cables are permitted. It is most commonly used to connect the service drop to the meter base and from the meter base to the distribution panelboard.

This cable is suitable for dry locations with an operating temperature not exceeding 90°C and has a voltage rating of 600V.

This particular 4-4-4-6 size, with an ampacity of up to 95 Amps, is commonly used for:

  • Main panel feeds in residential and light commercial buildings.
  • Subpanel feeds in homes, garages, and small offices.
  • Power distribution from meter bases to panelboards.
  • Feeding large electrical appliances, such as HVAC systems and electric water heaters.

Also Known As:

4-4-4-6 Copper SER Service Entrance Cable, 4-4-4-6 Reinforcement Tape Service Entrance Cable, 4-4-4-6 SER Cable, 4-4-4-6 SER Service Cable, 4-4-4-6 Copper Service Cable, 4-4-4-6 Round Service Entrance Cable, 4-4-4-6 Copper Wire.

Construction:

Conductor:

The "4-4-4-6" designation means this SER cable contains four conductors:

  • Three phase conductors (hot wires) with 4 AWG size for carrying current.
  • One bare neutral conductor with 6 AWG size for returning current.
  • The conductors are cabled together with a bare copper neutral conductor.
  • A reinforced binder tape holds the assembly together.

All conductors are made of annealed soft-drawn copper, which provides high conductivity, durability, and corrosion resistance.

Insulation:

Each insulated conductor is coated with XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which provides:

  • High heat resistance (rated up to 90°C).
  • Moisture resistance for dry locations.
  • Excellent dielectric strength and resistance to chemicals and abrasion.

Jacket:

SE cable is jacketed with gray sunlight-resistant polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This dielectrically strong insulation is resistant to corrosion, abrasion, chemicals, and mechanical impact.

Standards:

  • ASTM- All applicable standards
  • UL Standard 44 for XHHW-2 conductors
  • UL Standard 83 for THHN/THWN conductors
  • UL Standard 854
  • Federal Specification A-A-59544
  • National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. 2011 Edition
  • RoHS/ REACH

Specifications:

  • Size AWG: 4-4-4-6
  • Weight per 1,000 ft: 585 lbs
  • Outside Diameter: 844 mils
  • Conductors: Annealed Soft Copper
  • Stranding: Phase & Neutral Conductors: 7
  • Stranding: Equipment Ground Conductor: 7
  • Insulation: XLPE

    FAQ's

What does 4-4-4-6 CU SER mean?

Two #4 AWG copper hots, one #4 AWG copper neutral, and one #6 AWG copper equipment grounding conductor.

What size copper SER is appropriate for a 100 amp service?

4-4-4-6 CU SER is the standard cable for a 100A dwelling service or feeder, sized under NEC 310.12 using the reduced-ampacity allowance for dwelling services (formerly the "83% rule").

    What is copper SER cable?

Copper SER is a NEMA and UL type designation for Service Entrance cable, Style R, built with copper conductors. "SE" identifies it as service entrance cable, and "R" designates the construction style: the individually insulated conductors are cabled together and covered by a jacket over a reinforcement tape or braid layer. This distinguishes it from Style U (SEU), where a bare concentric neutral is wound around the insulated conductors. Copper SER is rated 600V and governed by NEC Article 338.

What are the advantages of copper SER over aluminum SER?

Copper carries roughly 60% more current per equivalent conductor size than aluminum, so a copper SER cable is physically smaller than the aluminum equivalent for the same ampacity. Copper is more mechanically durable, less prone to termination issues, and does not require antioxidant compound at connections. The trade-off is cost: copper typically runs three to four times the price of aluminum at feeder sizes.

Does 4-4-4-6 CU SER include a ground wire?

Yes. The #6 conductor is the equipment grounding conductor, sized per NEC Table 250.122.

Can I use 4-4-4-6 CU SER for a subpanel?

Yes, for a subpanel with a load up to 100A.

Can copper SER cable be used in conduit?

Yes. Copper SER is permitted in conduit where physical protection is required. Ampacity adjustment factors in NEC 310.15(C)(1) kick in once more than three current-carrying conductors share the raceway. Example: one 4-4-4-6 CU SER in a PVC sleeve counts as three current-carrying conductors, so no derating applies; two cables in the same conduit require an 80% derate.

Is copper SER cable rated for outdoor use?

Yes, most modern copper SER is listed for outdoor use when properly supported and protected from physical damage per NEC 338.10 and 230.51.

How far can I run 4-4-4-6 CU SER before voltage drop becomes a problem?

At 100A on 240V, approximately 105 feet within 3% drop. For longer runs at 100A, step up to 3-3-3-5 or 2-2-2-4 CU SER.

Can I use copper SER to feed a mobile home?

Yes. NEC 550.33(A) lists Type SE cable as one of the permitted wiring methods for mobile home feeders, provided the cable contains four conductors: two hots, an insulated neutral, and an equipment grounding conductor. At the mobile home disconnect, the neutral and equipment ground must remain separated.
