Fiber Optic Cable

Is fiber optic faster than Ethernet on data transmitting?

fiber optics cable

Ethernet cable and fiberoptic cable are both designed for similar applications, particularly data transmission and Internet network connection. But optic cable seems to have become the preferred choice for this task. So does it really transmit data faster than Ethernet? Let’s find out.

What is an Ethernet cable?

Ethernet cable is designed for computer networks and helps data transmission in local area networks (LANs). Ethernet cable is made of copper and transmits data via an electrical current that runs in the wire. It can be plugged into many devices, like your computer or Internet router to provide a connection.

Because Ethernet cables became a solution for an Internet connection when it was on the rise, the wiring was the go-to Internet cable choice. But the need for higher speed has led Ethernet cable to lose the competition to various fiber optic cable types.

What is a Fiber optic cable?

Fiber optic cabling is used for Internet connection and related data transmission, too. But it is particularly used for modern-day connections because it can handle the fast transmission of huge loads of data with no drastic losses in data quality or quantity.

Fiber optic HDMI cable is made of thin fibers of glass and transmits data via pulses of light. This leads to a much higher data transmission speed than any other cable could offer before. Fiber cable outdoor installation allows using it for not only small network connections but also those running longer distances.

Thanks to the unprecedented capabilities of fiber optic HDMI cables, these have become the go-to wiring for Internet connection today.

Ethernet vs Fiber optic cables

While Ethernet cables were revolutionary several years ago because they allowed for Internet connection, the capabilities they offer today no longer meet the demand. In particular, the speed of Ethernet cables started at 10 Mbps (megabits per second). However, later the cabling could provide 100 Mbps and even 1,000 Mbps.

Still, this is nearly not close to the capabilities of fiber optic wire. In fact, fiber optics cable can transmit as much as 10 Gbps (gigabytes per second), which is significantly faster than Ethernet cable.

Besides being incredibly faster, fiber optic wiring technology offers some other benefits. For example, a single fiber optic HDMI can run for up to 24 miles without any data loss, while Ethernet is limited to 1.76 miles only.

Then, fiber optics wire is safer because it uses light to transmit data instead of electric current, which means there is no fire hazard. For the same reason, fiber optic is not susceptible to any signal interference, which translates into minimized data loss.

Of course, Ethernet also has some benefits, like lower cost and the fact that it is more widespread, hence fewer complications during installation. But fiber optic connectors solve the issue of installation conflict with ease. At the same time, the growing demand for faster connection is reducing the cost of fiber optics.

All things considered — yes, fiber optic wiring is much faster than Ethernet cable, as well as it is safer, more reliable and in growing need. Since the majority of networks will likely be changed to optic cable at some point anyway, it is reasonable to choose fiber optics today.
