How Many Outlets on a 15 Amp Circuit?

In the United States, you can run about eight outlets on a single 15-amp circuit, given that each outlet draws approximately 1.5 amps.

It's essential to ensure that the combined electrical load of all devices plugged into the circuit does not exceed the circuit's amperage rating. In the U.S., the maximum safe load for a 15-amp, 120-volt circuit is 1,800 watts (15 amps x 120 volts). Aiming for 80% of this value is generally recommended to allow for safety and unexpected surges, which would be 1,440 watts.

For continuous loads, the NEC recommends not exceeding 80% of the circuit's ampacity. This is done in order not to overload electric components.

Please note that if the device requires a dedicated outlet, this rule does not apply. For a dedicated outlet, only one device can be placed on a circuit.

Which Devices Can Be Placed Together On A 15 Amp Circuit?

The devices that do not require a dedicated circuit and can be part of eight outlets placed on a 15-amp circuit include:

  • General lighting, including standard fixtures and lamps.
  • All types of computers, laptops, and computer components like printers.
  • All types of televisions, game consoles, and entertainment systems
  • Stereo systems and turntables
  • Clocks
  • Fans
  • Small kitchen appliances, such as blenders, toasters, coffee makers, and steam cookers
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Hair dryers (even though they are prone to drive significant power, they do not need a dedicated circuit).
  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Chargers
  • Small portable heaters

Which devices require a dedicated 15-amp outlet?

Now, let's move to devices that require a dedicated 15-amp outlet:

  • Garbage disposals: Depending on the model and horsepower, some garbage disposals might be suited for a 15-amp dedicated circuit, especially if used simultaneously with other kitchen devices.
  • Over-the-range microwave ovens: Some smaller or less powerful microwaves can operate on a 15-amp circuit, requiring a dedicated circuit.
  • Refrigerators: A dedicated circuit prevents fridges from tripping. However, a dedicated circuit for a refrigerator is more of a recommendation than an outward requirement.
  • Dedicated lighting circuits: This is only applicable for areas where constant lighting is crucial or for rooms with a significant amount of fixed lighting. In other cases, lighting circuits are perfectly fine on a shared outlet.
  • Window Air Conditioners: Smaller units may be okay on a 15-amp circuit.
