SOOW And Portable Power Cables

SJT, SVT, And Other Rare Types of Portable Power Cables

When portable power cords are mentioned, the ones that usually come up are the most popular and widespread ones, such as SOOW, SJOOW, SEOOW, and others. However, many other portable power cords on the market are given less attention. These are SVT, SJT, and SVO. This blog looks into these cables' applications and their differences.

What is an SVT Cord?

SVT is a portable power vacuum cleaner cord, as well as a light-duty cord. These are the two common meanings of this term. Among all portable power cords, SVT is used in the highest range of applications. The letter "S '' indicates that this is a service cord, the letter "V" means that it is a vacuum cord to be used in vacuum cleaners, and "T" means that this cable has thermoplastic insulation. This is a junior service entrance cord with a voltage of 300 volts and a temperature of 60 C. The cable has a stranded copper conductor consisting of multiple strands, PVC insulation, and a PVC jacket. An SVT cord is not resistant to oil and weather in any capacity, so it should be used indoors in all circumstances.

SVT Cable Applications

Service junior vacuum cord SVT is used in small, light-duty tools and appliances, such as:

  • Vacuum cleaners
  • Food processing tools
  • Other light applications in different types of home and office equipment
  • In light applications as a temporary light-duty extension cord.

SJT vs. SVT - What Makes Them Different?

SJT cable is a service junior thermoplastic cable. While it is similar to SVT because of the 300v voltage rating and thermoplastic insulation, what makes them different is the fact that SJT is intended for light-duty applications and use within vacuum cleaners. At the same time, SJT is a cable meant for hard-duty applications. Just like SVT, SJT has a stranded copper conductor consisting of multiple strands, PVC insulation, and a PVC jacket.

What makes SJT suitable for hard service is the fact that it has thick insulation. An SVT cable has thin, light insulation that determines it to be a cable for vacuum cleaners. An SJT cable comes in a greater variety of sizes from 10 to 18 AWG, while SVT is only available in a limited variety of 17 AWG and 18 AWG.

The applications of SJT Cord include:

  • Hard Industrial Tools and Equipment
  • Portable Power Cords
  • As an extension cord with light-duty tools

What is an SVO Cord? SVO vs SVT

SVO is a variation of a portable cable for vacuum cleaners, similar to SVT. What makes this cable different from SVT is the fact that it has a thermoset insulation and jacket. The insulation is made of EPDM, while the jacket is neoprene. The cable is used in vacuums and light-duty appliances.

The outer jacket of this cable is resistant to oil. Because of the thermoset insulation, an SVO cable is a slightly more expensive version of the vacuum power cord. Though the insulation and the jacket of this cable are resistant to oil, they are both really thin, which means that the cable is not recommended to use in conditions where it is subjected to acid, grease, oil, or solvents.
