2 Fiber Optic Zipcord Indoor Multimode OM3 Plenum Tight Buffered Cable

Also Known As:

  • 2-Strand MMF OM3 Zipcord Plenum Cable
  • Dual-core Multimode OM3 Indoor Plenum Zipcord
  • 2F OM3 Multimode Plenum Tight Buffered Zipcord
  • Twin Fiber OM3 MM Plenum Zipcord Cable

Description

"Zipcord" fiber optic cable refers to a design where two individual fiber optic cables are conjoined with a thin web or connective piece, making them look somewhat like the two parallel cords in a zipper.

The cable consists of two parallel fiber optic strands. Each of these strands has its own jacket, and they're joined together side-by-side, much like the structure of lamp cord or speaker wire.

Zipcord cables are commonly used in patch cord and backplane applications. They are also prevalent in desktop connections, where individual fibers need to be routed separately.

While the traditional zipcord consists of two fibers, similar constructions with multiple fibers joined side-by-side can also be found, though they might not be referred to as zipcord by all manufacturers.

The design of the zipcord makes it relatively easy to strip the jacket from individual fibers during the termination process.

Specifications:

  • 2 Fiber Optic: The cable houses two individual fiber strands, ideal for duplex communication, meaning simultaneous sending and receiving of data.
  • Zipcord: A design where the two fibers are conjoined in a side-by-side fashion, reminiscent of a zipper's cords. They can be easily separated if necessary.
  • Indoor: Specifically designed for interior installations. It's not built for outdoor conditions.
  • Multimode OM3: The fibers are multimode type, optimized for 850 nm signals. OM3 is designed for laser-optimized 10 Gb/s transmission over shorter distances, up to 300 meters, and can also support 40Gb/s and 100Gb/s up to shorter lengths.
  • Plenum: The cable's jacket is constructed to be flame-resistant and emit limited smoke if exposed to fire. This makes it suitable for use in air-handling spaces, like the areas between ceilings and floors in commercial buildings.
  • Tight Buffered: Each of the two fibers inside is covered with a tight buffer, a protective plastic coating that offers additional protection. It also aids in handling during installation and termination.

Features

- 900μm and 600μm tight buffered fibers designed to support rapid termination
- Available in 2.9mm, 2.0mm and 1.6mm zipcord designs
- Available in 4.8mm and 2.9mm round designs
- LSZH constructions available
- Available with bend-insensitive single-mode and multimode optical fibers
- Flexible, flame-retardant and color coded outer jacket
- Supports all high performance networks including OM4/10 gigabit ethernet systems

Applications

  • Air-Handling Spaces: Thanks to its plenum rating, it's apt for spaces used for air circulation systems in buildings (e.g., HVAC systems).
  • Building Networks: This cable can be used for shorter distance data transmissions within a building, making it ideal for Local Area Networks (LANs) in office spaces, educational institutions, etc.
  • Data Centers: Especially useful for intra-data center connections over short distances between racks or different sections.
  • Backbones in Small to Medium Buildings: Connecting different departments or floors, especially when the distances aren't exceptionally long.
  • High-Speed Workstations: For industries or research institutions where high-speed data transfer is required between workstations.

The main advantage of this specific cable is the blend of the multimode fiber's high-speed capability over short distances (thanks to OM3 specification) and the safety offered by the plenum-rated jacket, making it ideal for high-speed indoor installations in commercial buildings.
