Choosing A Portable Power Cable: Type W vs. SOOW
Type W and SOOW are popular portable cables that are often confused because of their similarities. However, they have slightly different applications, mechanical properties, and, most importantly, voltage rating. Read this blog to learn the distinctions between the two types of cables, as well as what the term "portable cable" really encompasses and what the distinction is between the terms "portable cord" and "portable cable."
What are the contrasts between Type W and SOOW Power Cables?
- Voltage: With its 2000V rating, Type W is a cable for high-voltage applications. SOOW portable power cable has a voltage rating of 600 volts. This is a fundamental difference between the two cables that determine the scope of their applications.
- Insulation and Jacket: Both SOOW and Type W have EPDM/CPE insulation/jacket combination. However, the consensus is that the latter is that type W cable has higher durability and is suitable for harsher environments. The distinction between the cables in terms of toughness is quite narrow.
Are Type W and SOOW cables only allowed for temporary applications?
While the term "power cord" indicates that the cable is only used for temporary applications, this is not what best describes SOOW, and Type W cables are mostly referred to as portable power cables, which means that they are suitable for both permanent and temporary electrical solutions. The confusion on whether these cables are suitable for permanent use stems from the terms "portable power cord" and "portable power cable" are often used interchangeably, and the line between them is blurred.
- Type W cable is double-rated as RHH/RHW-2, which makes it perfect not only for applications in portable tools but also for general-purpose industrial cable as a hook-up wire. For this reason, Type W cable is often referred to as both the portable power cable and a regular power cable.
- SOOW is a portable power cable that is primarily used in portable equipment, such as motors, machinery, and tools. It is suitable for control circuits and power supply. The cable is used both in temporary and permanent settings.
