Specification
4-4-4-6 Copper SER Service Entrance Cable
Allowable Ampacity at 60° C: 70 Amps
Allowable Ampacity at 75° C: 85 Amps
Allowable Ampacity at 90° C: 95 Amps
Applications:
4-4-4-6 Copper SER cable is a service entrance cable designed for use where service entrance cables are permitted. It is most commonly used to connect the service drop to the meter base and from the meter base to the distribution panelboard.
This cable is suitable for dry locations with an operating temperature not exceeding 90°C and has a voltage rating of 600V.
This particular 4-4-4-6 size, with an ampacity of up to 95 Amps, is commonly used for:
- Main panel feeds in residential and light commercial buildings.
- Subpanel feeds in homes, garages, and small offices.
- Power distribution from meter bases to panelboards.
- Feeding large electrical appliances, such as HVAC systems and electric water heaters.
Also Known As:
4-4-4-6 Copper SER Service Entrance Cable, 4-4-4-6 Reinforcement Tape Service Entrance Cable, 4-4-4-6 SER Cable, 4-4-4-6 SER Service Cable, 4-4-4-6 Copper Service Cable, 4-4-4-6 Round Service Entrance Cable, 4-4-4-6 Copper Wire.
Construction:
Conductor:
The "4-4-4-6" designation means this SER cable contains four conductors:
- Three phase conductors (hot wires) with 4 AWG size for carrying current.
- One bare neutral conductor with 6 AWG size for returning current.
- The conductors are cabled together with a bare copper neutral conductor.
- A reinforced binder tape holds the assembly together.
All conductors are made of annealed soft-drawn copper, which provides high conductivity, durability, and corrosion resistance.
Insulation:
Each insulated conductor is coated with XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, which provides:
- High heat resistance (rated up to 90°C).
- Moisture resistance for dry locations.
- Excellent dielectric strength and resistance to chemicals and abrasion.
Jacket:
SE cable is jacketed with gray sunlight-resistant polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This dielectrically strong insulation is resistant to corrosion, abrasion, chemicals, and mechanical impact.
Standards:
- ASTM- All applicable standards
- UL Standard 44 for XHHW-2 conductors
- UL Standard 83 for THHN/THWN conductors
- UL Standard 854
- Federal Specification A-A-59544
- National Electrical Code, NFPA 70. 2011 Edition
- RoHS/ REACH
