Australian Cable Standards Explained: AS/NZS vs. IEC vs. UL

If you buy or specify cable for a project in Australia, voltage ratings, sizing units, colour codes, and installation references all differ from those required by US standards.

What AS/NZS Means

AS/NZS stands for Australian and New Zealand Standards. These are joint national standards that both countries publish and enforce for electrical products and installations. AS/NZS 3000 sets the wiring rules. AS/NZS 3008.1.1 covers cable sizing, ampacity, and voltage drop. AS/NZS 5000.1 covers low-voltage polymeric-insulated power cable up to 0.6/1 kV.

There are two other standard families that anyone specifying cable for Australia might run into: IEC and UL/NEC.

IEC standards are international technical benchmarks published by the International Electrotechnical Commission. Countries can adopt them, modify them, or reference them inside their own national rules. Many AS/NZS standards are aligned with or derived from IEC parent standards. IEC 60364 covers low-voltage installations, IEC 60502-1 covers extruded-insulation power cables up to 3 kV, and IEC 60228 defines conductor sizes and classes.

UL and NEC are the US equivalents. UL standards govern cable construction and safety testing, and the NEC (NFPA 70) governs how cables are installed. AS/NZS 3000 plays the same role in Australia that NFPA 70 plays in the United States. AS/NZS 5000.1 plays a role similar to that of UL construction standards such as UL 44 or UL 83.

What Australian Compliance Actually Requires

Four practical points matter most for anyone moving product into the Australian market.

Sizing is metric. Australian cable is specified in mm², not AWG or kcmil. AS/NZS 3008.1.1 provides the ampacity and correction tables, and the 2025 edition adds DC ratings up to 1,500 V.

Voltage drop is capped. Total voltage drop from the point of supply to the point of utilisation is generally limited to 5%.

Color codes differ. Green/yellow is reserved for protective earth. Neutral is black or light blue. Active conductors cannot use any of those colors. This is a common failure point for imported cable that meets US color conventions.

Voltage markings follow the U₀/U format. Common ratings are 450/750 V and 0.6/1 kV. A US cable rated 600 V does not carry an equivalent AS/NZS marking, even if the electrical performance is comparable.

There are structural differences between American and Australian standards. Australian standards test for specific construction, insulation, fire performance, and short-circuit behavior against AS/NZS test methods. Even where the underlying performance is equivalent, the certification pathway is separate. Approval requires either a product built and marked for the Australian market or one that has been dual-certified.
