Specification

2/0-2/0-2/0-1 ALUMINUM SER CABLE

Allowable Ampacity for 2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-1 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 60°C: 115 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-1 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 75°C: 135 Amps

Allowable Ampacity for 2/0-2/0-2/0-2/0-1 ALUMINUM SER CABLE at 90°C: 150 Amps

Applications:

2/0-2/0-2/0-1 Aluminum SER cable is used as a service entrance cable in residential and light commercial applications. It supplies power from the meter base to the main panel and is also used for subpanel feeders, branch circuits, and high-load electrical connections. The cable is rated for 600V and can be installed in dry and wet locations with a maximum operating temperature of 90°C.

This cable size is commonly used for:

  • 150A main service panel feeds in single-family homes, per NEC 310.15(B)(7).
  • Subpanel feeds in large residential properties, such as multi-unit dwellings and apartments.
  • Power distribution from meter bases to 150A panelboards in light commercial buildings.
  • Supplying power to high-load appliances, such as HVAC systems, electric furnaces, and water heaters.
  • Backup generator connections where a 150A-rated feeder is required.

Also Known As:

2/0-2/0-2/0-1 type r cable, 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 service entrance cable, 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 ser cable, 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 aluminum ser cable, 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 aluminum service entrance cable, 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 electrical entrance cable.

Standards:

  • Ampacities based on National Electric Code, 2005 edition, section 310-15

  • 60°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated 100 Amps or less or marked for 14 gauge through 1 gauge conductors

  • 70°C when terminated to equipment for circuits rated over 100 Amps or marked for conductors larger than 1 gauge

  • 90°C wet or dry locations

  • For dwelling units, conductors shall be permitted at listed ampacities to be utilized as 120/240 volt, 3-wire, single phase service conductors that supply the total load

  • UL 44

Construction

Conductors:

The 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 designation means this SER cable contains:

The conductors are made of compact stranded soft-drawn 8000 series aluminum, cabled together with a reinforced binder tape for structural integrity.

Insulation:

Type XHHW-2 cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation for heat, moisture, and chemical resistance.

Assembly:

Two, three or four insulated conductors and a bare ground conductor cabled together and covered with a reinforced binder tape.

Jacket:

The cable jacket used in its design is Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). The jacket protects the inner components of the cable from potentially damaging external forces. PVC is robust and resistant to oil, sunlight, water, flames, acids, chemicals, radiation, impact, abrasion, and weather changes. Sequential footage markings that help the user identify the appropriate length during installation are noted on the cable jacket.

Specifications:

  • Insulated Cond(s) Size AWG: 2/0

  • Bare Conductor Size AWG: 1

  • Nominal O.D. Inches: 1.164

  • Approx. Weight lb/1000FT: 637 lbs

  • Ampacity at 90°C: 150 Amps

  • Ampacity in dwelling: 150 Amps

FAQ's

What does 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 AL SER mean?

Two 2/0 AWG aluminum hots, one 2/0 AWG aluminum neutral, and one 1 AWG aluminum equipment grounding conductor.

What is SER cable?

SER is a NEMA and UL type designation for Service Entrance cable, Style R. "SE" identifies it as service entrance cable, and "R" designates the construction style: the individually insulated conductors are cabled together and covered by a moisture and flame-resistant jacket over a reinforcement tape or braid layer. This distinguishes it from Style U (SEU), where a bare concentric neutral is wound around the insulated conductors under the jacket. SER is rated 600V and governed by NEC Article 338.

Does 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 AL SER include a ground wire?

Yes. The 1 AWG conductor is the equipment grounding conductor.

Can I use 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 AL SER for a subpanel?

Yes, for a subpanel with a load up to 175A.

Can AL SER cable be used in conduit?

Yes. AL SER is permitted in conduit where physical protection is required. Ampacity adjustment factors in NEC 310.15(C)(1) kick in once more than three current-carrying conductors share the raceway.

What is the difference in applications between aluminum and copper AL SER cables?

Aluminum AL SER is the industry standard for large feeders because it is less expensive and lighter than copper at comparable ampacity. Aluminum requires larger conductor sizes for the same load and antioxidant compound at terminations. Copper SER is chosen where space is tight or mechanical durability is critical.

Is AL SER cable rated for wet locations?

AL SER manufactured with XHHW-2 insulated conductors is rated for wet locations. Standard XHHW or THHN versions are dry-location only.

Does interior AL SER need to be in conduit?

No. Interior AL SER can be run exposed or concealed following the installation methods for NM cable under NEC Article 334.

How far can I run 2/0-2/0-2/0-1 AL SER before voltage drop becomes a problem?

At 175A on 240V, approximately 129 feet within 3% drop.

Where should service entrance conductors terminate?

Per NEC 230.70, service entrance conductors must terminate at the service disconnecting means, located at a readily accessible location either outside the building or inside nearest the point of entrance.
