Corrosion Hardy or stainless steel rigging and ropes should be washed with fresh water on a regular basis. Using a water-soluble cleanser will not harm the metal and can make general deck cleaning a lot easier. Parts should be inspected after each use. Cables must be checked for wire breaks, misaligned swage fittings, and corrosion. Swaged fixtures should be checked for cracks. Other stainless parts can be inspected at the same time. Stainless steel can stain and corrode. It is an alloy, but it does still contain carbon. If an extensive discoloration is present, or something called pitting, the parts must be replaced. If a part requires scraping or grinding to remove corrosion, it most likely must be removed from service and replaced with new parts. Regular cleaning and inspections will assure the best possible life service for these parts.
