Advice on Outdoor Electrical Outlet Installation

  I'm thinking of adding a couple of outdoor electrical outlets for garden tools and outdoor lighting. What are the code requirements I should be aware of? Also, do you have any tips on waterproofing and safety considerations for outdoor outlets? Any guidance or resource links would be much appreciated!

  • Make sure your outdoor outlets are GFCI-protected (Article 210.8.).
  • Outlets must have weatherproof covers that protect them from the elements when not in use and in-use covers for outlets that might be used with items like outdoor lights, which stay plugged in for extended periods (Article 406.9). 
  • The NEC specifies minimum height requirements (usually about 18 inches above ground) and locations where outlets should be installed, such as near your home's front and back doors.
  • Outdoor outlets should be on their circuits, mainly if they will be used for high-power tools or appliances. This helps prevent circuit overloads.
  •  Ensure all outlets, boxes, and covers are rated for outdoor use.
  • When inserting plugs, consider installing "in-use" waterproof covers that seal around cords. This protects the outlet and plugs from water ingress while in use.

  Also, here are some more general tips: think about the exact locations where the tools and appliances will be used, and plan the locations for outlets accordingly.
