Allowable Ampacity for 8/2 Underground Feeder Cable UF-B Copper 600V(Direct Burial): 40

Allowable Ampacity 8/2 Underground Feeder Cable UF-B Copper 600V in Duct: 40

Also Known As:

8/2 Copper Underground Feeder Cable, 8/2 Copper Direct Burial Feeder Cable, 8/2 Branch Circuit Wiring Cable, 8/2 UF-B Wire, 8/2 Copper Direct Earth Burial Cable, 8/2 Copper Branch Circuit Cable, 8/2 UF-B Direct Burial Wire, ufb wire, ufb electrical wire, underground cable wire

Applications:

An underground feeder cable's prime purpose is to bring the power from the residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to outdoor constructions, which include pumps and lighting constructions. The electrical cable is suitable for direct burial, as well as direct exposure to the sunlight. It is permitted for use as feeder or branch circuit cable if provided with overcurrent protection. Copper Underground Feeder Cable UF-B has a rating of 600 volts.

Standards:

  • Ul Standard 493 for Thermoplastic-Insulated Underground Feeder and Branch Circuit Cables
  • For use in interior wiring in wet, dry or corrosive locations under recognized wiring methods of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
  • Acceptable to be installed as a Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable following NEC Article 339-3 (4)
  • Acceptable for use per NEC Articles 300-4(b) and 339
  • ASTM - B3 and B-8
  • UL Standard 83
  • Federal Specification A-A-59544
  • RoHS/ REACH

Construction:

Conductor:

UF-B wire has solid or stranded Type THHN/THWN that are laid parallel with an uninsulated grounding conductor. The conductors are made of stranded annealed bare copper.

Insulation:

The cable is insulated with a PVC jacket with a nylon covering. It is resistant to moisture, grease, corrosion, sunlight, and chemicals.

Specifications:

  • Size AWG: 8
  • Weight per 1,000 ft: 222 lbs

FAQ's

What is UF-B Wire?

UF-B wire (Underground Feeder - Type B) is an electrical wire used for direct burial in the ground without needing additional conduit. It's water-resistant, sunlight-resistant, and suitable for outdoor and underground applications, particularly for powering outbuildings and exterior lighting.

What is the difference between UF-B wire with or without ground?

UF-B wire with ground is used for applications where additional safety is needed, such as when the wire is exposed to moisture. UF-B without ground can be used when local codes don't require grounding (f.e. lighting circuit where local code allows it).

What is UF-B cable permitted for use?

Article 340 of the NEC permits UF-B cable to be used for direct burial without the conduit. It also allows it for wet, damp, and corrosive locations. It can also be used above ground if UV-resistant and in conduit. UF-B is suitable for branch and feeder circuits for outbuilding and exterior applications.

Can UF-B wire be used indoors?

You can use UF-B indoors, but this is not a common practice. NEC does not ban UF-B indoors, but NM-B and THHN in conduit are more common interior cables that are easier to install.

What is the difference between UF and UF-B Wire?

UF-B is a modernized version of the UF cable with better moisture, corrosion, and sunlight resistance. Most of the underground feeder cables currently sold in stores are UF-B.

Can UF-B be buried?

The cable is designed to be buried. The standard burial depth is 24 inches.

Can UF-B wire be put in conduit?

It is possible to run UF-B through PVC or metal conduit for underground applications, but THWN is a preferable option as it is easier to install.

Can UF-B wire be exposed?

UF-B wire can be exposed if it is UV-resistant and not subject to physical damage.

How to strip UF-B wire?
  • Turn off the power for safety.
  • Slice the gray outer jacket carefully without cutting the inner wires.
  • Peel back the jacket to expose the insulated wires.
  • Use wire strippers to remove the insulation from the ends of each wire, typically about 3/4 inch.
  • If there's a ground wire, strip it similarly if insulated.
