  This practice is not NEC-approved, and, although some people splice different wire gauges, it's generally not recommended due to potential ampacity issues and safety concerns. 

  
  For safe and reliable connections, it is always better to use wires of the same gauge. If you choose to splice different wire gauges, proceed with caution and at your own risk.
